Lexar

A 100 foot tall ancient cave dwelling (one of thousands) in the Cappadocia region of central Turkey October 12 2006. For 16 centuries, the bizarre rock structures of this 4,000 square kilometer region provided home and shelter for Anatolians and early Christians, with St. Paul the Apostle forming the first Christian colonies here. Following the 2nd century Roman persecutions and 7th century Arab invasions, generations of Turks made the caves their permanent homes until the 1950's, when the government deemed them unsafe. The region's unique rock formations are made up of compressed and eroded 60 million year-old volcanic ash (tufa stone), a light porous stone with excellent insulating properties and easy to cut with simple tools.
